Press Kit

Click here to check out a copy of the original Sims press kit disc which features game-related fact sheets, screenshots, and a video interview with creator, Will Wright.

This "press kit" disc was sent out to journalists so that they could prepare written articles to accompany the game's release.

Fish

Surprise! Here's a genuine vintage .gif of the Sims 1 aquarium's animation:

An animated gif of an isometric, pixel art aquarium containing five multi-colored fish swimming back and forth.

This archive contains a promotional desktop application that requires you to clean, feed, and watch the fish in the aquarium. This probably won't work on modern Windows, but it works in a virtual machine running 98 or XP!

Tunes

I'm not really into modern jazz but I still love the original Sims soundtrack. Genre-wise, it's mostly new age music whose motifs lie somewhere between elevator music and moody socialite fodder. Thematically, however, it perfectly sets the mood for the game's hyper-parody of American suburbia.

My favorite song in the base game is Mall Rat, which sounds like it should play in the background of an early 2000s Barbie movie. However, the music added by the other expansion packs blows the base game's music out of the water.

Check out Simtasy from the House Party expansion, which sounds like a b-side from the club scene in Blade. I also suggest afropop banger, Sims Vacation, from the pack of the same name.

Mods

Maxis released modding tools for the Sims 1 before the game even released, so there was a very robust market of player-created content in the 2000s. Most of those sites are long gone, but many of them have been archived and a few continue on:

This is a real cutout of the Sim that I made to represent my wife, Roach, in the Sims 1:
